Location & Travel
BY AIR
The nearest airports to Ormskirk are Liverpool John Lennon Airport (approx. 30 minutes drive) and Manchester Airport (approx. 40 minutes drive).
Liverpool Airport is smaller and mainly flies within Europe including UK destinations such as Derry/Londonderry, Isle of Man, Jersey, and Newquay
Manchester airport is larger and caters for more flights inside Europe and further afield. You can also fly directly from Manchester to London Heathrow which takes approximately 1 hour. London Heathrow has a wide variety of flights departing to all parts of the world. Please note that there is no train from Manchester to Ormskirk, so you’ll need to first travel to Liverpool and then travel on to Ormskirk on the Merseyrail (change at Liverpool Lime Street to Merseyrail Northern Line for Ormskirk Station).
If you fly into London, you will either need a connecting flight to Liverpool or Manchester, or you can take the train from London (you can usually book train tickets 12 weeks in advance, and booking well in advance is strongly recommended as train tickets can get expensive, especially during the summer holidays.)
From North America, traveling to Liverpool via Dublin is also an option, and some may prefer it as passengers traveling back to the U.S. have the option of clearing U.S. customs while in Dublin on your return flight home (saving time on your arrival back in the U.S.); others have sometimes had luck flying to Liverpool via Keflavík (Iceland).
BY ROAD
Leave M6 at junction 26 and join M58. Leave M58 at junction 3, taking the A570 towards Southport and Ormskirk.
You should see signs for ‘Edge Hill University’ when you leave the motorway. From junction 3 the journey is 2.8 miles and takes approximately 5 minutes.
The campus can also be reached from Preston or Liverpool via the A59.
If using an online route planner or sat nav, please note that the university postcode is L39 4QP. Please check that the route provided arrives via the main entrance on St Helens Road.

You can reach these stations from Liverpool Lime Street via underground/metro Wirral Line, or on foot. The journey from Liverpool Central to Ormskirk takes around 30 minutes, and four trains between Liverpool and Ormskirk run each hour. 3-day Solo Tickets are available for around £16.
- Via Preston: from Preston Station take train direct to Ormskirk Station. The journey from Preston takes approximately 30 minutes, but there is only one hourly train from Preston to Ormskirk.
- Via London: Take the train from London Euston to Liverpool Lime Street and then proceed to follow the directions above for traveling via Liverpool. (As stated above, you can usually book train tickets 12 weeks in advance, and booking well in advance is strongly recommended as train tickets can get expensive, especially during the summer holidays.)
BY BUS
Although it’s technically possible to take the 310 bus from Liverpool to Ormskirk (and back), it is not recommended as it takes much longer than the Merseyrail train; further, taking a bus from Manchester would require a route through Liverpool and would take 3+ hours.
RIDESHARE and TAXI OPTIONS
Uber will take riders between Liverpool and Ormskirk; keep in mind that the journey costs at least £25 at off-peak times (and more as demand increases). There are also many fewer drivers in the Ormskirk area than in Liverpool, so it might not be as easy to get a ride out of Ormskirk as it is to get one into town.
If you are unable to walk to campus, taking a taxi within Ormskirk might be your best bet.
